The expression of every interior architectural space is based on the presence of light and the effects it induces. Light is defined by a laborious study on formal, aesthetic and intensity influences over the space. Hence, it draws various effects regarding the space size, shape and the views thus offered. Natural light can’t meet every functional and aesthetic need of our homes throughout the entire day. Therefore, artificial lighting plays a much bigger part by defining the ambient, highlighting or shading off volumes and by delivering special effects if properly oriented. Thus, artificial lighting delivers contrasts that draw tension between the material (physical elements) and the immaterial (shadows), enabling volumes to emphasize themselves.

Every interior space has its specific destination and requires a specific lighting pattern. There are spaces enclosed only by lighting objects and therefore there is a high physical and psychological potential acting upon the observer. Artificial light acts differently according to its intensity, color and shape and complements the natural light in order to deliver functional and aesthetic effects.

Interior lighting outlines the atmosphere, adding new shapes and points of interest to the interior spaces. Lighting objects have become artistic elements, either through the shapes and materials used, or through the light’s sensitivity and filtering effects and the numerous manufacturers are truly technical artists of series production. This is why displaying the lighting objects must be precise and accurate, in order to achieve a harmonious assortment of light rays, colors, materials and textures.

There are several means of illuminating an interior space. Direct lighting is oriented towards certain points of interest or high use areas. Indirect lighting is reflected in the interior space by uniform surfaces, visually increasing the space and dimming the contrast between distinct surfaces. Ambient lighting complements the personality of any interior setting being, at the same time, a genuine relaxation input. Dim light shades off the clear outlines of the room, creating the illusion of a wider space as well as developing an intimate atmosphere. Accent lighting is used to define and highlight specific areas or points of interest, adding character and visual interest to a focal point in the interior space.

Through its interchangeable patterns of lights and shadows, interior illumination animates the space and articulates the volumes within it. The answer may be in the light levels and lighting schemes. Every home will have a unique light level that depends on numerous aspects: the room size, the color of the decoration, the density of furniture in the interior space. It is an eclectic mix, but these are factors that make a huge difference if considered properly. Artificial light plays an important part in the mix, since it can create an infinite array of atmospheres and moods in any room, from bright and invigorating to subdued and tranquil.

Shaping energy or the way it is transmitted is an incredible art form, not yet thoroughly applied. A light carved in a transmaterial expression is a foundation for the future. Our lives are everyday shows and therefore light is extremely important for further transmitting our feelings and thoughts.
