Although the main source of inspiration for the Country style of interior design is likely to come from your own country, you have to take into consideration some general rules of the internationally known Country style.  With so many countries and so many country styles, we ask ourselves which are the predominant Country décor styles? The answer is threefold: the French Country style inspired by the interiors of Provence, the English Country style and the rustic American country style.

The general rule of thumb in Country style décor is orientation toward usability and functionality in a casual and warm environment. Think of the habitat as a refuge from the overcrowded cities and the daily stresses of urban life.

French Country Style

French country style colors are bright and lively. Lavender, sunflower yellow, and sky blue are commonly used colors in the French Country style. The furniture is simple and typically made of pine. Large dining tables with caned chairs, massive armoires, and four-poster beds are characteristic French country furnishings.

The casual look is quite popular in the French Country style. To accomplish it, allow for randomness in your decor. Cracked flower pots or peeling paint might be a good starting point in finding ways to give the objects in the room, a slightly imperfect look.

Don’t forget to use lavender, a very popular color in the French Provence region, where the French country style originates. You can use lavender for decor and scent in the closets, in drawers, or even on your bedding to induce a more peaceful sleep.

English Country Style

In contrast to the French country style, the English country style uses dark colors such as deep reds, browns, greens, and hardwood essences such as cherry and mahogany for furniture.

The furniture arrangement is purposely overcrowded with upholstery and large bookcases or cabinets. Porcelain objects and paintings representing hunting or horsemanship scenes are popular accessories in the English Country style of interior design.

American Rustic Country Style

American country style is a mixture of styles that acknowledge America’s heritage. The American country style makes good use of wood, which was used for building log cabins and almost everything you find inside log cabins and western style buildings, because it was easy to find and to work with. Initially, specialized building machinery was not available, so everything was made hand-made using basic tools. These constraints led to a certain style that became a staple of the American Country style.

The furniture has a practical orientation, but also a decorative one. Round tables and four-poster beds are very popular in this style. A combination of the traditional country styles is the desirable approach when decorating your space, but it is important to choose a main style around which to add elements from the other Country Styles.  After a little practice, you will have developed a personal Country style.
