The Art Deco Style of Interior Decoration

The Art Deco Style of Interior Decoration
The 1925 International Exposition of Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris marks the starting point of the Art Deco style of design, a preliminary stage in the evolution from the traditional styles to modern interior design styles. Where once you would find elaborate furniture or heavy chandeliers, enriched with complicated carvings in dark, heavy wood or iron, the Art Deco style brought simplified designs using basic geometric shapes and repeated patterns on novel materials like chrome, glass or plastics.

Art Deco colors
Art Deco brings about the use of more lavish and uncommon colors, such as black and metallics. Shades of green and pastels, as well as bold and bright colors, are popular Art Deco color themes. The practice of painting each wall in a different color is very common in the Art Deco style of interior design. Metallic colors are also common, as they create a shiny look and feel. An example of using black is for flooring, where you can have a black and white checkerboard tiles pattern.  You can paint the ceiling in black or at least parts of it.

Art Deco geometric shapes
Simple geometrical shapes, like angular shapes using repeated patterns to draw attention, were very popular in the Art Deco era.  An innovative element for the common geometric shapes was the rounded corners seen on furniture, interior architecture, and even buildings.

Art Deco materials and finishes

Materials and finishes are the places where Art Deco design brought the greatest changes, and had its greatest impact on the evolution of interior design styles. Switching from traditional, expensive materials to the more nonconformist, and cheaper ones allowed for new ways of designing interior spaces.

Metals like chrome and aluminum are used for furnishings such as tables, and for decorative accessories like vases or mirrors. Glass or Plexiglas are used for table tops,  or to provide a shiny look for different parts of the room, like the walls. Plastics are also common for their ability to provide a shiny, polished finish and because they are affordable and  it is very easy to work with these materials.

Accessorize your Art Deco style designed room with wallpapers or poster prints, use simple objects, tall, and slightly curved. Golden wallpaper prints are welcomed and also objects colored in pink, bright blue or bright green.  The Art Deco Style is very easy and affordable to implement, and can bring great satisfaction to someone with a modern oriented style aesthetic..
