Renovating 101 Part 3:

After having completed the most important and also provocative tasks – deciding on the project, finishes and budget – you will now face a new challenge, answering the following question. Do you find yourself crowded by a tight distribution hall and want open, airy and communicating spaces? Or, on the contrary, do you consider intimacy an important asset of your home?

If you choose the latter, take yourself to the next step. Otherwise, send a friendly notice to all of your neighbours, letting them know that the ‘home makeover’ process is about to set in.

Before touching anything, you must consult the building lay-out plan, which you should have received when acquiring the property. The reason you need this is because you have to make sure that you take the structural elements into consideration when demolishing your walls. If you fail to do so, you will affect the building’s resistance to natural disasters, such as earthquakes. After you have obtained the building plan, ask for the professional opinion of an architect, who should draft a demolishing project based on the original plan, thus ensuring that your work from now on will be both safe and authorized.

The following procedure is a more complicated one. As  liberating as it can be, bringing down the walls should be done by a specialized team who will know exactly what to do,  ensuring minimum risk and who will help you get rid of all the recycled materials. It will probably take a few days, time you should take to relax and prepare yourself for the weeks to come.

Stay tuned for a true work-out and for tricks that will enable you to enjoy the work and make a fun and instructional experience out of it.
