Renovating 101 Part 2:

The interior renovation of your apartment/house consists of a series of aspects that need to be taken into consideration. When establishing a timeline for completing your project, be realistic and bear in mind that every product and service has a lead time, that could be days of months and that could affect the project development.

We identified a few general stages that you might have to take account of, as they would increase the project’s duration: evicting the furniture, scrubbing the old painting out, removing the wall and floor finishes (faience, stoneware, parquet or floor cloth), removing the old heaters, the interior and exterior joinery (doors and windows), assembling the new joinery, installing the electrical and water equipments, laying the new finishes, mounting the sanitary appliances, the power outlets and the switches.

Analyze every aspect of your interior design project and develop your own list of home renovating stages. Gather every piece of paperwork, keep records of every conversation you have and write details concerning the decisions you make. You will find this very helpful, no matter what issues you encounter. When choosing the deadline, take two very important aspects into consideration: your own availability and the number of specialists your team consists of.

For the following weeks, you will face a time-consuming project that asks for a strict surveillance. Thus, if you want to develop a serious project management and you are full time worker, hire a project manager who could very easily be an interior designer or the head of the working team. This will enable you to keep a close eye on the course of the project, if you can’t supervise it yourself.

Next, make a list of the appropriate materials that you need to purchase, based on the home layout plan and the renovating stages identified above. Select your vendors according to your needs and budget and keep their contact details on hand, as you will probably have to contact them on a regular basis.

Make sure that you provide your team with everything they request, in order to avoid wastage of time. Also, as the job progresses, require written agreements from people you work with and remember to note down all the changes that occur.

Feel free to update this by sharing your personal experience with aspects that might delay the design schedule.
