Alternative Lighting

In a time when our main concern is to preserve the available resources, the focus stands on discovering alternative means of developing an environmentally friendly way of living. Given that artificial lighting is one of the main energy consumers, there are numerous extremely innovative energy efficient devices that are worth mentioning. For now, Adesignerspot presents two alternative lighting systems, one designed for indoor spaces and one for outdoors.

The Relumine project belongs to design duo Mischer’Traxler and features pairs of recycled lamps connected by a fluorescent bulb. The Viennese designers vary each piece by combining different styles of lamps found at flea markets and the result is a modern lighting fixture that transforms cast-off lamps into installation pieces.

The start of this project was a focus on light sources. Instead of completely designing a newly shaped lamp, ‘Relumine’ plays on the fact that we have to switch from old light bulbs to new energy saving light sources. Each ‘Relumine’ uses two, discarded lamps, which are disassembled, sanded, newly lacquered and adapted with newer technology, before they are connected by a glass tube which holds a fluorescent tube. By introducing a different means of light source to the old lamps, their look and feel changes completely. They become one new unit, each with its own character. Together these two lamps need less energy than each one in its previous life (Mischer’Traxler).

Our second suggestion is Firefly – an energy efficient system that features an outdoor table with inbuilt lights and solar panels attached to the center of the tabletop. Vuk Dragovic’s friendly design enables the storage of solar energy during the day and the emission of light with the press of a button. The lighting concept aims to replace the romantic candlelight with a natural source of energy. The centrally placed lamp not only pops up to emit a soft glow – it can also project any form of messaging (via stencils) to the floor space below.
