Decorative wallpaper is best used in spaces that have little or no décor, in which the wallpaper can serve as a design element in itself. Wallpaper can infuse a room with energy and vitality, but some patterns can be tiring due to their intensity, so it is very important to pick a pattern that brings life to your room without overwhelming your space.

Pale and monotone wallpapers, and wallpapers in which the pattern is very close in tone to its background should be used in heavily populated rooms such as the living room. Wallpapers with strongly, contrasting colors are best used in hallways, guest rooms, and other enclosures that are not constantly occupied. If a strong wallpaper is to be used in a more permanent enclosure, it should be balanced by the use of neutral and plain curtains or drapery.

In a room with wall hangings, wallpaper patterns are not recommended, but if you would like to hang paintings or photographs in a patterned room, it is best to use larger objects that will not get lost in the pattern on the wall. Also it is preferable to use a wallpaper that is in a pale or neutral color.

Generally, small patterns are ideal for smaller rooms, and large patterns for larger rooms, but other factors such as tonal value and color should be taken in account here. It is also important to keep in mind the subject of the pattern, within the context of the room.
Small samples of wallpaper tend to appear a little lighter than the effect produced when a whole wall is covered in said sample, so it is advised to use a wallpaper that is slightly lighter in tone than what you envision, to compensate for this effect.
