We start our journey-in-search-of-style in Bangkok Thailand, where the widely renowned DesignLAB came up with Lub_*D- an engaging, fun and innovative hostel for backpackers all over the world. The place has a suggestive name – Lub_*D means “a good night sleep” in Thai, which perfectly embeds the hostel’s aim – to make tourists feel like home.

The entire design is developed around the concept of social interaction. The building envelopes a central core – the public outdoor area, where guests are encouraged to behave as they please. DesignLAB wanted to build a social platform which allows various intercultural interactions to take place. Thus, spaces such as the central court, the theatre room, the lobby and the patio were intended to maximize social activities.

The rooms’ particularities are the painted storytelling illustrations of unique destinations in the hotel neighborhood, others than the typical ones featured in regular tour guides. “Since physical location around the hostel is what we see as the main attribute of the project, we make sure that these destinations are unique and distinct” (DesignLAB).

The stars in the Lub_*D logo represent one of the symbols that define the hostel’s concept. They are parts of everyone’s local culture – parts of the same sky that reveals to us all. This lead to the Star Map located in the lobby area – an artifice that offers everyone a common background to start a conversation.

If you ask us, the hostel serves its initial goal. It’s a low-cost boutique hotel and, at the same time, a cozy and home-like place of social gathering, all wrapped in an explosion of colors and low-tech materials. Well done, DesignLAB!
